Assemble in this order. Attach one side panel to the base, then the second side, then the front and back panels which pull the whole thing square. Check the diagonals with a tape measure: when both diagonal measurements match, the box is square. Clamp and leave the glue for an hour before handling.

Butt joints reinforced with glue and screws are entirely adequate for a shoe box. If you want something neater, add small internal corner blocks, which add rigidity without any additional skill. Rebated or mitred joints look better but require a router or a good saw setup.

Ventilation, the Step Most People Skip
