You make a quartz dining table by having a slab of engineered quartz cut and polished to your finished size, then mounting it on a base strong enough to carry the weight without flexing. The stone is fabricated by a specialist with diamond tooling, not shaped at home, so your part of the job is choosing the slab, working out the dimensions and edge profile, building or buying a rigid base, and bonding the two together with a flexible silicone bead. Understanding that division of labour is what keeps the project realistic.
Engineered quartz is made from crushed natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, then pressed and cured into slabs. Because it is manufactured rather than quarried, the colour runs consistently through the sheet and the surface is non porous. That matters for a dining table: it does not need sealing, it resists staining from red wine and olive oil, and it wipes clean with soap and water.
It is not indestructible. Resin softens under heat, so a hot pan straight from the hob can leave a dull mark, and the corners will chip if struck hard. Treat it as a refined surface rather than a workbench and it will look the same in ten years as it does on day one.
Everything else follows from the size, so settle it before you speak to a fabricator.
Check the route into the room as well. A stone top cannot be tilted through a tight stairwell the way a timber one can, and it cannot be trimmed later. Measure the doorway, the turn on the landing and the height of the ceiling on the stairs.
Visit a stone yard rather than choosing from a small sample. Quartz slabs vary in the scale of their veining, and a pattern that looks subtle on a ten centimetre chip can look busy across a two metre top. Ask to see the full sheet your top will be cut from.
Thickness is the next decision. Twenty millimetres is the common choice for dining tables and keeps the weight manageable. Thirty millimetres looks more substantial but adds considerably to the load. A mitred edge, where a thin slab is folded around a timber core, gives the appearance of a very thick top without the mass, and it is the approach most furniture makers use for chunky stone tables.
Edge profiles change the character more than people expect. A square edge with a light arris reads as contemporary. A softened bullnose feels gentler and is kinder to forearms. A chamfer catches the light along its length and suits a room with directional lighting.
Send your fabricator a dimensioned drawing showing the finished size, the thickness, the edge profile and the corner radius. A small radius on each corner, even two or three millimetres, dramatically reduces the chance of a chip.
The fabricator will cut with a bridge saw, shape the edge with a profiling wheel and polish through progressive grits. Ask for the underside edge to be eased as well, since a sharp lower arris is where most damage begins. If the top will overhang the base by a long distance, tell them, because they may recommend a thicker slab or a supporting rail.
The base is the part you can genuinely make yourself, and it is where the project succeeds or fails. A quartz top of one hundred and sixty by ninety centimetres in twenty millimetre stone weighs well over a hundred kilograms, so the base must resist both downward load and sideways racking.
Whichever you choose, the base should support the slab across at least sixty per cent of its length, and the overhang at each end should not exceed around a quarter of the total length. Set the leg positions inboard far enough that nobody sitting at the end kicks them.
Fit adjustable feet. Stone is unforgiving on an uneven floor because the slab will not flex to take up the difference, and any rocking places stress on one corner.
Do not bolt stone directly to metal. Rigid fixings concentrate stress and crack the slab as the base expands and contracts. Instead, run a bead of neutral cure silicone along the top face of every rail, lower the slab into place with help, align it carefully, then leave it undisturbed for twenty four hours. Silicone holds firmly while allowing microscopic movement.
Lift the slab with at least three people, always on edge rather than flat, since a slab carried flat can crack under its own weight. Keep it vertical until the moment it is lowered onto the base.
Use trivets for anything straight off the hob and coasters under hot mugs on darker colours, which show heat marks more readily than pale ones. Clean with warm soapy water rather than bleach or abrasive cream, since strong chemicals dull the resin over time. Wipe spills of turmeric, beetroot and red wine reasonably promptly even though the surface is non porous, because pigment can sit in the polish.

Three errors account for most disappointing results, and all of them are avoidable at the planning stage.
One further point concerns colour. Very dark quartz shows dust, fingerprints and water marks far more readily than a mid tone, which matters on a surface people touch at every meal. Pale and softly speckled finishes are more forgiving in daily family use.
Making your own quartz table makes sense when you need an unusual size, a specific colour match with a worktop, or a base design that nothing on the market offers. Once you add slab cost, fabrication, delivery and the base, the total often lands close to a finished table, and you carry the risk if a measurement is wrong.

Realistically no. Quartz needs water cooled diamond tooling, and dry cutting produces silica dust that is genuinely hazardous. Cutting also risks cracking the slab and voids most manufacturer guarantees. Have it fabricated professionally to your drawing.
