Wipe the seat with a damp cloth between grits so raised grain shows up before you finish rather than after. Finish with a hardwearing oil, three thin coats, allowing full drying between each.
Lamination is the method behind most factory made moulded seats, and you can reproduce it on a small scale. Cut a former from layers of medium density fibreboard shaped to your intended curve, then cut a matching caul for the top face so pressure is even.
Resaw your timber into strips between two and three millimetres thick. Thinner strips bend more willingly and spring back less. Coat each face with urea formaldehyde or a slow setting polyurethane adhesive, stack them onto the former and clamp from the centre outwards so glue is pushed towards the ends rather than trapped in the middle.
Leave it clamped far longer than the tin suggests. Overnight is sensible. When you release it, trim the edges on a bandsaw and clean up with a spokeshave. The finished seat will be thin, strong and slightly springy, which is why this style suits a seat that has no back and needs to feel light.
If woodworking tools are not to hand, foam does the job well. Cut a plywood base of eighteen millimetre birch ply, round the edges slightly, and drill your fixing holes before you cover anything.
Use high resilience foam of at least thirty five kilograms per cubic metre density. Anything softer collapses within months of daily use. Cut a base layer to the full seat size, then a second smaller layer that stops short of the edges, which creates a domed centre. Bevel the top edges with an electric carving knife or a bread knife, then wrap the whole thing in polyester wadding to soften the transition lines.
Stretch your cover fabric over the top, pulling from the four cardinal points first, then working round in opposing pairs. Staple into the underside, keeping pleats gathered evenly at any curve. Finish with a dust cloth stapled over the base so the underside looks considered rather than improvised.
A beautifully shaped seat still fails if it sits at the wrong height. Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop and aim for a gap of two hundred and fifty to three hundred millimetres between the seat top and that underside. Because carving removes material, measure your seat height at the deepest point of the dish, not at the rim.
A slight backwards tilt of two to three degrees makes a stool feel more settled, and it is easily achieved by drilling the leg mortises at a fractionally different angle at the front and back. Any more than that and you will feel yourself sliding, particularly on a seat with no back rail.
Making a seat is satisfying, and it is the right choice if you want a specific timber, an unusual size or a piece with a story behind it. It is less sensible if you need four matching stools by the weekend, or if your kitchen calls for a gas lift mechanism and a swivel plate. Those components are difficult to fabricate well at home and they are the parts most likely to fail.

Carving too deep is the most frequent error. A deep dish looks impressive on the bench but traps you in one position and becomes uncomfortable faster than a shallow one. Fifteen to twenty millimetres is plenty.
