To lower a gas bar stool, sit on the seat, lift the lever beneath it and stay seated as the seat descends, then release the lever at the height you want. Your body weight is what pushes the seat down, so the stool will not lower on its own while unweighted. If the stool has no lever, it is probably a screw lift model, in which case you lower it by turning the seat anticlockwise while it is unweighted, or clockwise on some designs, until the height is right.
That is the whole method, and it works on almost every gas lift stool sold in the UK. The reason people struggle is usually one of three things: they are trying to lower it without sitting on it, they cannot find the lever, or the mechanism has become stiff and needs cleaning before it responds properly.
Levers are placed in one of three positions. Most commonly there is a small paddle under the front or side edge of the seat, which you lift upwards. Some designs use a ring beneath the seat that you pull outwards or twist. A few place a lever on the footrest ring itself, which you push down with your foot while seated.
Run your hand slowly under the whole rim of the seat rather than assuming the lever is at the front. On upholstered stools the paddle can sit close to the seat plate and is easy to miss by touch. Looking at the underside with the stool tipped gently on its side settles the question in seconds.
Sit fully on the seat with both feet supported, either on the floor or on the footrest. Take hold of the lever and lift or pull it in one deliberate movement. The seat will begin to descend smoothly. Keep watching the height and release the lever as soon as you reach the position you want, since the valve closes immediately and locks the seat there.
If you overshoot, stand up, lift the lever again and the seat will rise while unweighted. Adjusting in a couple of stages is normal and puts less strain on the valve than trying to hit the exact height in one go.
Once set, test the height at your counter. You want 25cm to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the surface. If the stool cannot reach that range at its lowest setting, the stool is taller than your counter requires rather than faulty.
The reverse is simply a matter of removing your weight. Stand beside the stool, lift the lever and the seat will rise. On some models you can help it by lifting the seat edge lightly with your free hand, which is useful where the cylinder is stiff from lack of use.
Avoid adjusting height while sitting heavily and repeatedly, since working the valve under full load is what wears the mechanism over time. It is a small habit that adds years to a cylinder.
Screw lift stools have no lever and no gas. The seat is threaded onto a central column, and height changes as the seat rotates. Stand up, take hold of the seat with both hands and turn it. One direction lowers, the other raises, and which is which depends on the thread, so try a half turn and observe.
If the seat turns freely but will not change height, the locking collar under the seat may be tight against the thread. Loosen it, adjust, then retighten. If the seat will not turn at all, the thread has likely collected grease and grit. Wipe it clean, then apply a thin film of dry lubricant rather than a heavy oil.
Work through the possibilities in order. First, confirm you are seated, because an unweighted gas stool will not descend. Second, check the lever travel: if it feels loose or has to be pulled unusually far, the linkage may have shifted out of alignment and can often be repositioned by loosening its bracket, seating it squarely against the valve pin and retightening.
Third, look at the column. Grit and dried polish on the exposed chrome can make the movement stiff. Wipe it with a dry cloth, then use a small amount of silicone spray at the moving joint rather than an oil that will attract dust.
Fourth, check the base and seat fixings. Screws loosen with daily swivelling, and a base that has worked loose puts the column under an angle, which makes the mechanism feel reluctant. Tighten everything by hand until firm.
If none of that helps and the lever does nothing at all, the cylinder valve has probably failed. A sealed gas cylinder cannot be repaired or refilled at home, so the choice is between fitting a replacement cylinder or replacing the stool.
The opposite fault is more common than a stool refusing to lower. A seat that sinks slowly under weight, without the lever being touched, has lost its nitrogen charge through a failed seal. This is wear rather than misuse in most cases, and no amount of tightening will bring it back.
A support collar clamped around the exposed column will hold the seat at one fixed height and is a reasonable interim measure. Otherwise, replacing the cylinder is possible on many designs, provided you can match the column diameter and the extended and closed lengths. Never cut or drill a cylinder, since it remains under pressure even when it will no longer support a seat.
Adjustability is only useful within the right range. A standard UK worktop of 90cm to 92cm needs a seat at 60cm to 66cm, a raised breakfast bar of around 105cm needs 70cm to 78cm, and a purpose built bar of 110cm or more needs 80cm and above. Before adjusting, measure your surface and work out the target rather than adjusting by feel alone.
Check the underside of the counter too. A deep apron or a support bracket can reduce knee room by several centimetres, and that lower point is what your legs actually meet. Setting the seat by the top surface alone is how people end up lowering a stool repeatedly without ever finding a comfortable position.
If the cylinder has gone and the frame has already had a long life, replacing the stool is usually the better use of your time.
