Applying penetrating oil around the joint and leaving it for twenty minutes makes a noticeable difference on older stools, particularly in kitchens where steam has encouraged corrosion.
If it still will not move, grip the cylinder body with a pipe wrench and twist while pulling. Twisting breaks the friction seal even though the joint is not threaded. Wrap a cloth around the chrome first if you intend to reuse the part.
Never heat a gas cylinder and never attempt to cut or drill into one. The strut is pressurised and sealed, and damaging the casing is genuinely dangerous. If a cylinder is beyond removal, replace the whole stool rather than forcing it.
Not every stool has one. Where a footrest exists, it usually clamps around the cylinder housing with a bolt, or bolts directly to the legs.
Loosen the clamp bolt with a hex key or spanner and slide the ring off. On stools where the ring is welded to the frame, it does not come off at all and does not need to for transport.
Take the footrest off after the cylinder rather than before, because the ring often provides something useful to hold while you work on the cylinder joint.
Weighted disc bases are typically a single piece and need nothing further. Four leg bases sometimes bolt together, in which case a hex key separates them into flat components that pack easily.
Check for adjustable feet or floor protectors underneath and unscrew them if they protrude, since they bend easily during transport.
Older or more traditional adjustable stools sometimes use a threaded post rather than a gas lift. These are simpler. Spin the seat anticlockwise until it lifts clear of the thread, then unbolt the post from the base if required.
Clean the thread while it is exposed and apply a light smear of grease before reassembly. Threaded stools that squeak or stick almost always just need lubrication.
Reassembly follows the reverse order, with one important difference. Slide the cylinder into the base socket by hand, then stand the stool upright and press down firmly on the top of the cylinder, or sit on the assembled seat. Weight is what seats the taper properly. Do not hammer the cylinder into the base, since that can damage the valve at the top.
Attach the seat to the mounting plate next, checking that the release lever engages the valve pin correctly before tightening. Test the height adjustment before doing up the screws fully. If the lever moves but the seat does not, the lever is missing the valve and the plate needs repositioning.
Tighten screws in a diagonal pattern so the seat sits level, and give the stool a firm test press before use.
A cylinder that sinks slowly under weight has lost its seal and cannot be repaired. Replacement cylinders are widely available, but they come in different lengths and diameters, so measure the old one from the base of the strut to the top of the plate before ordering, and check the taper diameter at both ends.
