  • Open saddle brackets: match the opening width exactly, or add a millimetre if the brackets are set inside the panels.
  • Centre support fitted: measure each section separately, because the support is seldom dead centre.

Write the figure down. Do not rely on memory once you are kneeling on the floor with a saw in your hand.

Marking the Cut Line

A pencil line on chrome is almost invisible, so wrap a strip of masking tape around the rail and mark on that instead. The tape does two useful things: it gives you a clear line and it stops the blade skating across the polished surface on the first stroke.

To get the line square all the way round, wrap the tape carefully so the edge meets itself neatly, then cut along the tape edge. On timber dowel, roll the dowel against a try square and pencil round in one continuous motion. A cut that is even slightly out of square will leave a gap at one side of the socket and let the rail twist under the weight of coats.

Cutting a Metal Rail

A junior hacksaw handles a 25mm chrome tube comfortably. Use a blade with fine teeth, around 24 to 32 teeth per inch, because coarse teeth snatch on thin walled tube and tear the chrome.

Clamp the rail in a vice with soft jaws, or pack the jaws with folded cardboard so the chrome does not bruise. If you have no vice, lay the rail in the V of an open stepladder tread or have someone hold it steady on a workbench while you cut close to the support point. Cutting far from the support makes the tube flex and the blade wander.

Begin with two or three light backward strokes to open a groove, then settle into slow full length strokes. Let the blade do the work. Pushing hard heats the blade, blues the teeth and produces a ragged edge. As you reach the last few millimetres, ease off completely so the tube does not snap and burr.

Aluminium oval rail behaves in much the same way, though it clogs the blade more. A dab of candle wax or light oil on the blade helps it run freely.

Cutting Timber Dowel

Use a fine tooth panel saw or a tenon saw for dowel. Cradle the dowel in a bench hook or a simple V shaped offcut so it cannot roll. Start the cut on the far side of the line, keep the saw at a low angle for the first strokes, then raise it once the kerf is established.

Rotate the dowel a quarter turn every few strokes and follow the pencil line round. This keeps the cut square far more reliably than trying to plough straight through in one go.

Finish the Cut End

The cut end will have a burr, and on hollow tube the burr sits inside the bore where it will shred your fingertips. Take a flat file and dress the outer edge with a few passes at a shallow angle. Then use a round file or a rolled piece of medium abrasive paper to remove the internal burr.

On chrome, run a little clear lacquer or even a wipe of light oil over the bare cut edge. It will never be seen inside a socket, but it slows any tarnishing in a bedroom that gets damp in winter. On timber, a light sanding and a coat of matt varnish stops the end grain from drawing in moisture.

Fitting the Rail So It Stays Put

Offer the rail up dry before you fix anything. It should drop into both sockets with a gentle push and no bowing. If it fights you, take another millimetre off rather than forcing it, because forcing a rail can bow the side panels of a wardrobe and throw the doors out of alignment.

Set the rail height so your longest garment clears the base or the drawer unit below by at least 50mm. Check the level across the span with a small spirit level. A rail that is even slightly out of level will slide every hanger to one end within a week.

Sagging rails are the usual cause of doors that catch on wide units, and they put strain on the carcass over time.
