The back of a wardrobe is normally covered with a thin sheet material, usually hardboard, plywood or MDF between 3mm and 6mm thick, which is either pinned, stapled or screwed to the rear edges of the carcass. Fitted wardrobes built into an alcove or against a chimney breast often have no back panel at all. The plaster is the back. This works well when the wall is dry and internal, but it is less comfortable on external walls or in rooms that get cold overnight.
The straightforward fix is to batten and line. Fix vertical timber battens of around 18mm to 25mm thickness to the wall, then screw your panel to the battens. The gap behind allows air movement, and the panel gives you a clean, uniform surface. Painting it in the wall colour makes it recede. Painting it in a deeper contrasting shade makes the wardrobe read as a deliberate piece of joinery rather than a blockage.
Wallpapering the inside of a back panel is another quiet trick. It costs very little, it is completely reversible, and it lifts the interior every time the doors open. Choose something with a tight pattern so it does not fight with the clothes.
