You build a wicker bar stool in two stages: first construct a rigid frame, usually from hardwood or powder coated aluminium, then weave the seat and any side panels with rattan cane or synthetic weaving material. The frame carries all of the load, and the weave provides the surface and the character. A single stool takes most people a weekend: a few hours for the frame and considerably longer for the weaving, since a seat top alone can involve dozens of passes.
The critical detail is that wicker is a weaving technique rather than a material. Natural rattan cane suits indoor use, while synthetic polyethylene weave is the sensible choice for a garden bar or a conservatory where damp and sunlight would break down natural fibre.
Wicker seating is a composite object. Strip away the weave and you are left with a stool frame like any other: four legs, a seat rail, a footrest and cross bracing. Everything about strength and stability lives in that frame.
That means the frame must be built to full stool standards before a single strand is woven. Seat height of 24 to 26 inches suits a standard kitchen worktop, while 29 to 30 inches is needed for a tall bar or garden bar counter. Legs should splay slightly outward so the footprint is wider than the seat, which is what stops a tall stool tipping.
The weave then does two jobs. Across the seat aperture it forms the sitting surface, so it needs to be tight, evenly tensioned and supported by a rail on all four sides. On the sides and back it is decorative, so tension matters less and pattern matters more.
For the frame, choose a close grained hardwood such as beech, oak or ash in 45mm square section for legs and 20mm by 45mm for rails. Softwood is cheaper but crushes around fixings and will loosen. For outdoor stools, aluminium tube frames avoid rot entirely.
For the weave, natural rattan comes as cane strips in various widths, sold coiled and needing a soak before use. Synthetic flat weave is supplied on rolls, needs no soaking, comes in muted greys and natural tones and resists UV degradation.
Tools are modest: a saw, a drill with dowel or pocket hole jig, clamps, a chisel for cleaning joints, a rubber mallet, sharp scissors or side cutters, a staple gun with stainless steel staples, a bucket for soaking cane and PVA or exterior grade adhesive depending on where the stool will live.
Cut four legs to your chosen height, remembering that the woven seat adds around 10mm to the finished seat height. Cut the seat rails so the aperture is 300mm to 350mm square, which suits a comfortable seat, and cut the footrest rails to sit 250mm to 300mm above the floor.
Join legs to rails with dowels or mortice and tenon joints. Dry assemble the whole frame first and check it for square by measuring diagonally between opposite legs: the two measurements must match. Then glue up, clamp and let it cure fully before touching the weave.
Add a lower stretcher or a full footrest ring. On a tall stool this is not optional. It braces the legs against sideways force and gives the sitter somewhere to place their feet, and its absence is the most common reason homemade stools feel unstable.
Sand the frame smooth and apply your finish now, while every surface is still reachable. Once the weave is in place, finishing becomes very awkward.
Natural cane must be soaked in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes so it becomes pliable. Keep it damp while working, in a covered bucket or wrapped in a wet towel, since dry cane cracks as soon as you bend it round a rail. As it dries in place it shrinks slightly and tightens the weave, which is exactly what you want.
Synthetic weave needs no preparation, though it behaves differently: it stretches rather than shrinks, so you must pull it firmly as you go and accept that a slightly overtight weave will relax into the right tension. Cut lengths of around 3 metres to keep the work manageable, as longer strands tangle.
Plan your pattern before starting. A plain over and under weave is the simplest and the most forgiving. A herringbone weave looks more refined but requires you to keep count. Whatever you choose, mark the centre of each rail with a pencil so you can work outwards symmetrically.
Start by laying the warp strands: run cane from the front rail to the back rail, keeping the spacing consistent and the tension firm. Anchor each end with a stainless steel staple on the underside of the rail, hidden from view.
Then weave the weft across, passing over one warp strand and under the next, reversing the sequence on each row. Use a smooth stick or the handle of a screwdriver to push each row tight against the previous one. Every few rows, stand back and check the lines are straight, because a drift of two millimetres per row becomes very visible across a full seat.
Around the corners, wrap the cane round the leg once or twice to fill the gap and hide the frame. Finish each strand by tucking the end back under the weave rather than cutting it flush, then staple it beneath the rail.
When the seat is complete, press down firmly across the whole surface. It should feel taut with a slight give. If it sags, the tension was too loose, and the honest answer is that a sagging seat only worsens with use.
Side and back panels follow the same principle but carry no load, so you can be more decorative. Wrapping the top edge of the seat rail with a continuous binding of cane hides staples and gives a neat perimeter.
For natural rattan indoors, apply a clear lacquer or a light coat of danish oil once the weave has dried completely. This stabilises the fibre and makes it easier to dust. For synthetic weave, no finish is needed at all: a wipe with warm water is enough.
Fit felt pads or nylon glides to the feet last. On tiled kitchen floors they reduce noise, and on timber they prevent the sideways scuffing that stools always cause.
Natural wicker belongs indoors. Rain swells the fibre, sun bleaches it and repeated cycles of both make it brittle within a couple of seasons. If your stool will live on a patio or in a garden bar, build the frame from aluminium or a durable outdoor timber and weave it in synthetic material.
Ventilation matters as well. Wicker seating stored in a damp shed over winter can develop mould in the weave, so keep stools covered but airy, or bring them inside.
