You build a dining chair by making two side frames first, joining them with front and back rails, adding the back uprights and splat, then fitting a seat. For a single chair you will need roughly: two rear legs at 100cm, two front legs at 46cm, four seat rails, two side stretchers, one back rail and one back splat, plus material for the seat. Cut the rear legs from wider stock, since they are shaped rather than straight.
A chair can be built with hand tools alone, and many still are. The core kit is a marking gauge, a good marking knife, a square, a tenon saw, a set of bevel edge chisels, a mallet, a router or mortise chisel for the mortises, sash clamps, and a smoothing plane.
Power tools speed things up. A bandsaw is the single most useful machine for a chair maker because of the shaped rear legs. A router with a straight cutter and a simple jig cuts consistent mortises. A mitre saw handles the repeated angled crosscuts.
What matters more than the tool list is the marking. Chair parts are almost all cut at angles, and a single degree of error at the shoulder line compounds into a chair that rocks.
Traditional chair makers work from a rod: a full size drawing on a board or a sheet of ply showing the chair in side elevation and front elevation. Every length, angle and joint position is taken directly from the rod rather than from a tape measure.
Make one. It takes an hour and it removes almost every arithmetic error from the build. It also lets you check the look of the chair before committing timber, and you can lay components straight onto the drawing to verify them as you go.
Cut mortises before tenons. Mortises are harder to adjust, so it is easier to pare a tenon to fit than to widen a mortise accurately.
For seat rails, a mortise depth of around 30mm into a 45mm leg is typical, with the tenon about a third of the rail thickness. Where front and side rails meet in the same leg, mitre the ends of the tenons inside the leg so they do not collide.
Cut the tenons slightly full and pare back to a piston fit: the joint should go together with firm hand pressure, not hammer blows. A joint that needs force will split the leg when glue swells the timber.
Shoulders matter more than cheeks. A tight shoulder line is what makes the chair look crisp and what stops the frame racking. Take the time to knife the shoulders and saw to the line.
The rear legs are the defining component. They run from floor to top rail and change angle at the seat, which is why they are cut from wider stock on a bandsaw rather than made from straight sections.
Cut both legs together where you can, or make a template and mark each one from it, so the pair match exactly. Clean up the sawn faces with a spokeshave and a card scraper.
Because the rear legs lean, the mortises in them are not square to the face. Mark them from the rod and cut them with the leg supported at the correct angle in a cradle. This is the fiddliest part of the whole build and the part worth practising on an offcut first.
Assemble the whole chair without glue first. Clamp it, then stand it on a flat surface and check for rock, twist and square. Sight along the back to see that the uprights are parallel. Correct anything now.
Glue in stages. Bring the two side frames together first, let them set, then join them with the front and back rails. Trying to glue eight mortise and tenon joints at once while checking for square rarely ends well.
Use a slow setting PVA or a hide glue if you want the chair to be repairable in future. Wipe squeeze out with a damp cloth immediately, because dried glue blocks stain and shows through a finish.
A drop in upholstered pad is the easiest option: a plywood or timber frame with foam and fabric that sits into a rebate in the seat rails. It also makes future recovering simple.
A solid timber seat can be shaped with a scorp or an angle grinder fitted with a carving disc, giving a saddled seat that is comfortable without any padding at all. It takes practice and a good deal of sanding.
A woven seat in rush, paper cord or Danish cord suits lighter frames, adds no weight and looks appropriate on ash or beech. Weaving one takes an evening and the materials cost very little.
Sand progressively to 240 grit, working with the grain, then raise the grain with a damp cloth and sand once more at 320. Dining chairs are handled constantly, so a smooth finish is not just cosmetic.
Hardwax oil is the practical finish for dining chairs: easy to apply, easy to repair, and it leaves the timber feeling like wood rather than plastic. Two coats with a light sand between is enough. Lacquer gives more protection against spills but is harder to repair invisibly.
