Contemporary Furniture Design, Making a Statement

Art and contemporary furniture have a lot in common. The newer, bolder and more controversial the piece, the more divided the sentiments for and against it. While most contemporary furniture is mass-produced and sold through traditional venues some pieces continue to be uniquely crafted by artisans. These art pieces are then copied, at least to the degree of practicality, by major manufacturers and thus, finding a bold piece of contemporary “art” to perk up your décor is as easy as a drive to your local furniture showroom.

Like art, there are schools of contemporary furniture. Among these schools, the Scandinavian style has long set the standard for eye-catching contemporary pieces that are both functional and still artsy. The stark, clean lines and the simplistic style employed by their craftsmen make their furniture highly sought after by interior designers looking to update a house.

Choosing the right kind of contemporary furnishings to complement your home can be done using the same basic rules employed when shopping for any sort of furnishing. It won’t matter how outrageous or wonderful the piece is if it doesn’t perform in the capacity for which it is purchased. A chair, ergo, is for sitting. If you can’t sit in the chair, don’t buy it unless, of course, you are collecting it as art. The same goes for tables, cabinets and other contemporary furniture. Choose what you like and what suits your purposes.

Another nice feature, from a design point, is that contemporary pieces can actually blend well with other styles, and vice versa, if you spend the time and effort to find just the right one. With the art deco revival, many vintage pieces are finding homes next to 21st century art furniture. So, whether you want to go wholesale contemporary or just sport a special piece or two, you are bound to enjoy the fun of shopping for this style. Who knows? You might just discover it’s your style.
