The largest carbon variable in a furniture order is not the distance the van travels. That means the meaningful measure of transport efficiency for furniture is how many items fit in a load, not how heavy they are.
This is the whole logic of flat packing. A wardrobe shipped assembled travels mostly as air. The same wardrobe as boards on a pallet takes a fraction of the space, so far more units move per journey and the transport impact attributable to each falls accordingly. The counterargument, that flat construction furniture has a shorter life, is a genuine one and it belongs in the same conversation, because an item replaced twice as often has to be delivered twice as often.
Upholstery is the category where this cannot be resolved. A sofa arrives assembled because it cannot sensibly be built by the customer, so it travels at full volume for the entire journey. Returns follow the same logic with an additional stage, since the item must also be inspected, repacked and often written down. Packaging is the visible part of the problem and the smaller part of it. Corner protection and film exist because damage in transit creates a replacement item and a second journey, which carries more impact than the packaging itself.
