A bedroom storage cabinet is worth buying when you need enclosed, flexible storage that a wardrobe and chest cannot provide: folded clothing, bedding, bags, shoes, hobby equipment or anything you would rather not see. Before choosing a tall unit, measure the ceiling height and check the diagonal. A flat packed cabinet assembled on the floor has to be tipped upright, and if the diagonal measurement exceeds your ceiling height it will not stand up. Leave a small gap at the top rather than filling the height exactly. It makes the unit easier to position and easier to clean around.
Engineered board with a laminate or foil finish is the most common and, when the board is thick enough, entirely sound for bedroom use. Look for a properly finished interior rather than raw board, since coated interiors wipe clean and resist moisture better.
Solid timber costs more, weighs considerably more and can be refinished, which suits a piece you intend to keep indefinitely. High gloss finishes bounce light around and suit darker rooms, though they show fingerprints and need regular wiping. Matt finishes are more forgiving in daily use.
Whatever the material, check the back panel. A thin panel pinned to the outside allows the frame to twist under load. A thicker panel set into a groove keeps a tall cabinet square, which matters far more on a loaded storage unit than on a light bookcase.
The best positions are usually the wall behind the door, an alcove beside a chimney breast, or the short wall at the foot of the bed. Avoid placing a tall cabinet where it blocks natural light from the window or crowds the side of the bed you get out of.
