Antique Varieties of Old Fashioned Wooden Chairs

A chair is a stable, raised surface used to sit on, commonly for use by one person furniture stroes . Chairs often have the seat raised above floor level, supported by four legs dining room furniture . However, a chair can have three legs or could have a different shape depending on the criteria of the chair specifications. Wooden chairs encompass a variety of styles. The earliest chairs were little more than stools with backs. Arms were added, and richcarvingreplaced crude slats. The simple homemade examples of the earliest days gave way to many masterpieces wooden chairs, especially American chairs can be extremely valuable in their original conditions.

Once you have an idea of what type of chair you want, then you can narrow down your choice by the quality and price. Some of the types are Bergere, Chippendale, Fauteuil, Hepplewhite, Queen Anne, Wainscot, and Windsor. Some of these chairs are fake. Fakes often are identified through errors in craftsmanship. The wood on older chairs generally is thicker than those on modern imitations. Individual chair parts vary slightly in thickness and evenness because they were made with hand tools. Minute traces of paint on an otherwise bare, wooden chair usually are a sign that the chair is an authentic antique.

Forgers rarely attempt to duplicate such small remains. Old paints, too, differ from their modern counterparts in that they were made with natural plant and mineral colorants. Some other wooden chair styles popular during the Victorian era are Hitchcock chair, Morris chair, bentwood chair, platform rocker, track rocker, sleepy hollow rocker, Lincoln rocker. So, when deciding which wood chairs to buy, you need to consider how much work you want to have put towards them every year. Remember, though, wood chairs create a natural and comforting look that few plastic or metal chairs can recreate.
