A Home Moving Checklist Makes Moving Day Easier

Moving is a major undertaking. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, you have a lot to do to get ready for the trucks that will haul your household goods from one location to another. Whether you’re packing up yourself or your mover is handling the boxing up, it’s always a good idea to have a home moving checklist to ensure nothing gets missed.

As with any other sort of checklist, the idea is to compile a listing of things that must be done prior to the move. List them all, even the obvious. It is sad how often the obvious gets overlooked when the movers arrive. Your list could include things as simple as labeling the boxes with the room and a rough list of contents. It could also have a list of items that are going to be packed to travel with your, as opposed to riding in the moving van. After all, your great-grandmother’s pearls do deserve a bit of special attention. Add things like making sure the dog’s bowl and his lead are in the car.

Another sort of home moving checklist involves things you have to do rather than items you’re taking with you. You need to get the electricity switched off on the right date and, if applicable, arrange for it to be turned on in your new home. The kid’s schools have to be dealt with, both the ones they’re leaving behind and the new ones they’ll be entering. The phone company, the gas company, the newspaper service and, of course, the post office all need to be notified.

A checklist is a good way to make the often-emotional period when you’re packing up one home to move to another a little less stressful for you and your family. Be sure you don’t forget to include a few extra hugs for those neighbors you’ll miss and do get their addresses and phone numbers so you can stay in touch!
