6 Simple Steps To Make Furniture Look Rustic

There are plenty of ways to make your old furniture look less old, and more rustic. This is the best solution for some battered furniture pieces that require a new look. With a couple of simple steps, you can independently breathe new life into the old furniture piece – whatever it may be – an outdoor bench, an old chest of drawers,  or a beaten working table. And here is how you can do that:

6 Simple Steps To Make Furniture Look Rustic

Hammer the edges if they are sharp

This mostly concerns newly made furniture, especially if you make it on your own. Sharp corners and edges look and feel new, so if you are trying to make the piece look older and rustic, just take a hammer and make sure that your edges are no longer sharp.

Remove the old paint if any

If there is some old paint left, remove it with special paint stripper – they are sold in any hardware store. Apply the liquid with a brush, wait for about 15 minutes until the paint starts to bubble and carefully remove it with a spatula or a hard brush. It’s toxic, so do not forget about the gloves.

Sand your furniture piece

Use at least 220-grit sandpaper to smooth up the blemishes. If you rub too hard and too quick, the paper will get hot – so you can as well leave the gloves.

Paint anew

Two layers of paint are usually enough. For a really rustic look, you can make them contrasting – the lower one as a ‘hint’ of the previous shade and the upper one as your dominant colour. If you want to preserve wooden look (only applicable if the piece has never been painted before – it is next to impossible to remove all of the paint), just use wood any oil / polish / varnish of your choice.

Sand again

Use a milder sandpaper to smooth the furniture again. It is not necessary to go through the entire piece – just the parts that need fixing.

Use wax or any other finish

Apply another layer of finish. If you have painted the piece, use wax. If you have kept the wooden look, use the same varnish or polish as you did before second sanding.

Plus, you should not forget that plenty of new rustic furniture is available in various UK stores, and getting ready-made solutions will cost you even less effort. And, of course, old will remain old, no matter how hard you try to give your furniture piece a new look. Sure, most classy looking rustic furniture will be quite pricey – after all, solid wood is still one of the most expensive and one of the most durable materials. Fortunately, some new items can be found at sales, and there are always some stores that simply offer a more reasonable pricing policy than the others. Those are usually big retail chains, like Furniture in Fashion . The latter one is one of the best examples of a UK e-commerce platform that features vast product selection and surprisingly affordable price tags on every distributed item.
