5 Tips On How To Make Furniture Look Vintage

Old does not necessarily mean vintage. Quite often old furniture is simply some battered, unattractive piece that has stayed in your shed for years. Fortunately, with a little bit of determination, it is possible to give the old piece new life. Sure, the particulars will depend on the state of your furniture, as well as on the final look you are trying to create. On the whole, though, the procedure can be completed in several easy steps:

5 Tips On How To Make Furniture Look Vintage

Remove old paint

If the furniture piece has already been painted before, you might want to remove the old paint first. There are special paint strippers that can peel off even the thickest layers of old paint. Carefully apply the liquid to the surface with a brush (do not forget to use gloves) and wait until the paint starts to bubble. This may take up to 15 minutes. Then, peel it off with broad, not very sharp knife, or a special spatula.

Sand the furniture

Use rough sandpaper to remove the remains of paint and give your furniture piece a smooth look. This can be done manually, or with the help of special sanding device. The latter one will surely make the task easier.

Apply new paint

If you want to pain the furniture piece anew, there are a couple of ways to do so. For a vintage look, you can apply two layers – a base one and a surface one. The shades can be different – this way, it will seem like the piece has already been painted many times.

Sand again

You can sand the furniture once again when the paint is dry. Use milder sandpaper this time. It is not necessary to sand the entire surface – you can give an artistically battered look to specific areas.

Apply wax

Use wax to protect the results of your work. Usually, you will need at least two or three layers. Do not start applying the next layer until the previous one is soaked.

Sure, the whole procedure is only applicable to the old furniture – the furniture that seems to be past saving. If you need some exquisite vintage solutions, you should better buy ready-made items that are designed in vintage style. And, of course, there are genuine antique collections – usually, the items are in a pretty good state, because fine quality solid wood furniture is built to last for many decades. However, the price tag on the latter items in most antique shops will be skyrocketing.

On the whole, if you want to design your living room, dining room , or a bedroom in a vintage style, you should better stick to newly manufactured sets – sets that at the same time feature antique look. They are not the most affordable solutions in the market, but their build quality and amazing looks are usually worth the price.
